How to Integrate Study Abroad - by Field of Study

Studying abroad is a tremendous opportunity open to all students in the College of ACES. The best timing for study abroad will depend on an individual’s plan of study and the type of courses offered at the host institution. Therefore each student should develop an individual plan of study, working closely with his or her academic advisor and the assistant dean for study abroad, Dean Bohn. And we have put together a comprehenisive Study Abroad Handbook, which also has Top Tips for every major field of study in ACES.

Semester

Semester or academic year experiences abroad are particularly valuable, but may take some adjustment to the typical eight semester plan for a given field of study. You will have maximum flexibility in selecting your study abroad destination if you plan to take courses abroad that will fulfill open elective or general education requirements. However, several campus or college partner universities abroad do offer courses that are similar enough to the ones offered on campus that they may be used to fulfill specific course requirements in your concentration.

Summer

Summer abroad programs are easily integrated into any program of study!

Go to www.studyabroad.uiuc.edu for detailed program descriptions. You can search by term abroad, country, city, etc. Searching by academic areas has limitations, since the options given under "academic areas" do not match up well with  the names of majors in ACES. Therefore I recommend using the  Study Abroad Handbook. The Top Tips by major lists programs by semester, summer, winter break, and study tours.

Summer after:

Why now?

Do not go abroad if you:

   Freshmen

   year

Go abroad and explore the world instead of spending this summer the same way you did in high school!

·       Still need to complete remedial math or chemistry courses

·       Are doing your practical work experience (Hospitality Management)

   Sophomore
   year

Well, if you weren’t ready last summer, this is definitely the time to go. You may no have enough technical knowledge for an internship in the US yet.

·       Still need to complete the Quantitative Reasoning I requirement in your major (usually MATH 124, 234, or 220)

   Junior
   year

If you have waited until now, you may have to choose between doing an internship in the US or going abroad this summer.

In certain majors it may be more important to do an internship in the US than to study abroad. Discuss this with your advisor and with career specialists on campus and in ACES.

   Senior

   year

If you did not manage to study abroad so far, this is your last chance to do it. And you are still eligible  for the ACES study abroad scholarship!

Advanced Composition: Please note that advanced composition courses must be completed on the UIUC campus.
